Isn't it exciting, Waiting for Obama's VP?
It's the first ever that I have been vested enough in the race to actually care who the VP is.  As evil as Cheney is, he has opened up the VP spot to more power. . .Put someone in that spot who is just as aggressive, and it could really work for us--

In my alternate universe  Obama would pick Colin Powell--
I hope that he at least gets offered something, it's not unheard of for a Republican to be in a Democratic cabinet, though a Republican VP for a Democratic President is probably a far stretch.  I've always loved Colin Powell, thought him to be trustworthy, brilliant, diplomatic,  and would love to see him have a chance to remove any blemish that the whole *Iraq thing* left on him.

I *DO* think that despite Obama's message of change, it will have to be someone who knows the ins and outs of Washington.   B. Clinton wanted to change the way things were done in Washington when he was elected, and many members of his own party wouldn't go along with it. I'm sure Obama will go about it in a better way--but still, it's a pretty entrenched system.

I may hope that it would be John Edwards because he was my original horse in the race, but I'm not sure that he is the right choice. Edwards as an AG is quite appealing.

Bill Richardson--Didn't he say that he would never be VP?  that he would rather take care of New Mexico?  A good choice, though I'm not sure if he will be aggressive enough.

HRC is appealing in that I think all the negativity wold be focused on her, she will always be that bad seed-she can prob do anything to get shit done for Obama, and people aren't going to hate her anymore than they already do.  While she could make a good Senate Leader, I don't think i see that happening.  Do they really hate each other, or is it all just a ruse?  Unappealing in that I just can't hear Hilliary bashing for another 8 years. I'm pretty sick of hearing her name.

Jim Webb, Wesley Clarke might be good choices to combat McCain specifically. But I don't know that people care so much about the Terrorism scare tactics anymore since the economy is in the shitter.

A new woman?  Many seem to think that Obama will pick one of the new upcoming women in the Democratic party--I just don't see him paired with an unknown to the average American, especially an unknown woman, and winning  The only other woman besides HRC that I could see would be Madeline Albright--but she is an HRC supporter. However she is older, experienced, smart., knows her way around Washington as well as the world.

In crazy Universe- A younger Alan Greenspan. . .Or perhaps Warren Buffet.

Ah, well, maybe Obama will completely surprise us with his choice, and we will all be like, Ahhhhhhh. . .yeah, I forgot about him/her.  And then we can move onto guessing the cabinet members:)

Achieving success
is not the same thing as
enjoying success.

---Tomorrow is our first team meeting. We're having dinner at Tuk Tuk Thai; it's going to be casual and fun, a celebration and an excuse to get to know one another socially before we begin work. This is a fantastic team on paper. Let's see how we get along!

--How about that weather? Felicia and I just took a romantic moon-lit walk... in sandals, T-shirts and shorts. That just DOESN'T happen in the Bay Area!

Blood and Blazing Cars.
I live on the east side of San Jose. For those of you unfamiliar with the area, the east side is thought of as the "bad" side of town. The ghetto, if you will. And yet, I've always felt most comfortable in areas with low socio-economic status. These are my people. I've never grown up with money, and I'm most comfortable with people who know what it is to struggle.

And, to be honest, I don't think it's that bad. I have had my house broken into (though I think it is because we left the door unlocked) and that kinda sucked, but, overall, I'm not scared to live here. I've walked around at all hours of the night and never had anything scary happen.

Tonight, my side of town is earning its bad reputation. Within the last five minutes, I witnessed a fight (someone getting jumped?) in front of Save Mart during which a man was beaten by several guys, pushed into a rack of large glass planting pots, and cut so bad that we're not sure he's going to make it. While the other guys ran away, a crowd of people surrounded him to try to help while he sat in a pool (a pool--at least as big as the man was) of his own blood.

I hate not knowing if he is going to be okay.

And, while talking to a neighbor, found out that the liquor store down the street was robbed two nights ago.

And, a green Honda is ablaze (FLAMES) just down the road.

I feel like I am in the middle of the LA riots.

But this is my home. What can I say? Oddly enough, I'm still not scared.

Gay Marriage and Heroin
Right after school, just as the bell was ringing, Phoenixx and Venice, my students in another period (Pheonixx just performed for her first time at the San Jose Slam on Monday, FYI. Girl has more balls than me. Love her), rushed in all-afluster.

"Gay marriage is legal in California! We just had to come tell you because we knew you would be as excited as us!"

They are so happy. I want to cry.

I find myself primarily unable to rejoice at the news. I'm afraid. Afraid that somehow this isn't really true. That maybe it will get overturned, and I'll have my heart broken again. I remember all too clearly the bitterness that welled inside of me when prop 22 was on the ballot and failed. I was so sure that it would pass. After all, this is California, right? When it failed I crawled inside my bitterness and have stayed in that protective shelter since. It hurts my heart that somehow it is still okay for prejudice to exist in such an overt and malicious form in this world. I "understand" it from a sociological/cultural anthropological standpoint, but I will never understand it. Never.

So, I hope it sticks. But I'm scared to hope too much.

I wonder if this is how women felt at the time of Roe V Wade.

In other news, my daughter Mia had to do a biography for school and she chose Billy Holliday. It was a biography meant for youths, but it did not skirt the rape (which I decided to not explain to my ten-year-old. Not yet. Please, not yet.) and heroin part of her story. It only alluded to the prostitution part. Mia was very affected by how drugs took over her life. As part of her project, she decided to write a poem. I include it here because I am bragging. I think my kid is genius. Probably not, but she is to me.

Heroin(e )

Heroin is a stop sign
Waiting to end your life.
Turned a great singer
Beautiful person,
Into a woman
Sick and diseased.

Billie,
Why did you let drugs
Take over your life?
Why did you let heroin
Swallow your voice?

It may have felt so good
But it was killing you
Inside.

Notice the play on words with heroin(e)? An idea that sprung out of an initial misspelling. Okay, fine, it was my idea, but a mom's gotta help her kid.

Congratualtions California
I'm swamped with work, but wanted to take a time out to congratulate everyone  that have been praying for this day, I can't wait to see all the weddings :)

Boy, did I hear some stupid people say stupid things on the radio about this,  There was a ranting reverend who was all like Homosexuals are unfaithful, and their long term relationshoips don't last, and their divorces will be messy. .

Hello?  Last I heard, depending what survey you read, something like 30 % - 70% of married couples were unfaithful--in the case of the low percentage, the people issuing the survey  thought the number was probably more because people lied.

And we already have an awfully high divorce rate. I have contributed to this, thank you.

I hope those bastages don't succeed in making you all wait until November, or worse yet, until they have appealed as high as they can go.

Edit: Santa Barbara
So we've decided to go on a real vacation when my finals are over, so we're going to Santa Barbara instead of just to Monterey for the day.

Rockin'.

Eleven days without smoke is still happening.

What else, what else... Oh yeah, in fifteen minutes, I am taking a Biology quiz I forgot all about.

Again, rockin'.

And p.s. WTF is up with the heat today? I am not in Phoenix!

Can someone please sing the Hurry Up song for the economy?  Thank you

Since I work in sales, and people aren't buying as much, but I am paying much more for everything, I'm getting squeezed.  A salaried office job is starting to look attractive. . .Oh the Horror!!

I guess though, that it is Better for Obama if the economy sucks until after he is elected. John McCain will just keep saying it's supposed to be this way, 100 years. . .

Eleven days, no smoke.
If I can make it through another week or so, this will be vaguely less harrowing.

Why did I decide to quit right before finals again?

Berkeley Finals Recap
Oh, folks, this was an incredible event, our annual TEAM FINALS! We had a packed house (of course!) and raised our most funds ever for our team! The poetry and performances were stellar, in part because the scores remained close and competition was HEATED! Also, in part because these poets simply do not know how to compete half-assed.

---Before announcing the team, THANKS go out to all our volunteers, our staff, to ALL THE POETS who competed for the team this year. The Berkeley slam has gone through major changes this season and emerged re-invigorated, stronger, and better attended! This is in no small part due to our loyal and supportive fans, who make all this possible! Thank you for your support!

---High score of Round 1 went to Christian, though props should be given to Laura Yes Yes, who drew the “A”, performed a new poem, and STILL boosted scores up to a 27.3, minimizing score creep. Our judges took their jobs seriously, most kept track of the scores, so both “7’s” and “10’s” were handed down clear through the finale.

---High score of R2 went to Abe, who absolutely RIPPED his piece, “Psychiatric Drugs” and moved into first place by a tenth of a point! On his heels, Christian and Jason Bayani. Bayani also had a break-out performance with “35 To The Ocean”, but suffered a .5 time penalty. Things looked grim for Laura Yes Yes and Joyce, both of whom were considered major contenders but languished in 6th & 7th, respectively. Matt Blesse moved into 5th and The Poet “I” held on to 4th.

---In R3, nothing less than a heart-stopping performance and scintillating writing would cut the mustard. It was also in this round where we got to see some of our talented newcomers falter, as they simply didn’t have enough major works to survive the brutal qualifying process. There were essentially two battles going on: Abe, Christian, and Bayani for the win; Blesse, Laura, and Joyce fighting for 5th and a berth on the team.

---High score of R3 and the night went to Christian for “Blood Bank”, 29.8, giving him 1st and the Coveted Golden Macaroni Belt. Bayani’s “Tigres & Euphrates” earned a 29.5 and gave him 2nd overall. Had he not gotten a time penalty... Abe earned one of the night’s top scores, but in this rarified environment it was only enough to earn a very respectable 3rd. Poet “I” confirmed everyone’s predictions by remaining solid throughout and finishing 4th with “Case Of The Mondays”. Laura praised “The Body Beautiful” and made the team, barely! In her own words, it was the hardest she’s ever worked in a slam! Here are the numbers:

-----
Christian: 28.3, 27.6, 29.8 =85.7
Jason: 27.5, 28.4, 29.5 =85.4 (-.5 time)
Abe: 27.4, 28.6, 28.5 =84.5
“I”: 27.5, 27.8, 28.1 =82.9 (-.5 time)
Laura: 27.3, 26.5, 28.6 =82.4
---------
Matt: 27.4, 26.6, 27.1 =81.1
Joyce: 27.5, 26.1, 27.2 =80.7
Andrew: 25.1, 26.8, 27.6 =79.5
Dre: 26.0, 25.5, 27.3 =51.5

Wow.
I'm in psychology class, and my professor just said this:

The number one thing that high school students, when polled, said that they would abort a baby for if it could be determined prenatally was obesity.

Wow.

Craigslist vs. Ebay
This will be an interesting case. I hope craigslist's charter is supportive of their non-predatory practices. Otherwise they might have problems. One argument they might try is that the statements and actions of the officers, are a marketing effort that increase the goodwill value of the company.

Back from Germany
We are back from Germany now. We spent 20 hours in planes, trains and automobiles getting home. We had a wonderful time, both in Berlin and at the WGT festival, in Leipzig...

We have tons of footage of all of the bands we made it to see at WGT...(will post later) )

Cultural observations... )

Berlin )

Well, I already spent more time writing this than I intended... >.<

As much as it sucks to be back to reality, at least that includes a real bed and a shower that doesn't have a line in front of it. LOL - Most of all it was nice to see our cats and that the remember us. This morning, I got up and went to the "responsible conduct in biomedical research" class. /yawn... Tomorrow I go into the lab and figure out where my workspace is and when I start. Really, starting out in an exciting new lab is not such a banal reality to return to. *G* Wow - Everything is happening so fast... Back to laundry and bills and such...
